basic knowledge

Artisan keycaps are custom designed and handcrafted keycaps that are often used to replace standard keycaps on mechanical keyboards. Artisans are known for their unique artistic designs, often featuring intricate details, vibrant colors, and various themes.
Some artisans hand carve keycaps using materials such as resin or polymer clay, while others may use 3D printing or casting techniques.

Crafting artisan keycaps involves a series of carefully managed steps carried out by experienced artisans. The process includes sketching the design, creating prototypes through 3D printing or molding, cleaning the printed models, applying base coats, meticulously painting layers of color, casting resin, compressing molds, refining details, polishing extensively, and performing quality assurance checks before packaging the finished keycaps. Skilled artisans with years of experience oversee each step to ensure the creation of unique and high-quality keycaps.

The MX switch, also known as the Cherry MX switch, is a type of mechanical switch commonly used in mechanical keyboards. Developed by Cherry GmbH, it is renowned for its reliability and durability. MX switches come in different variations, including tactile switches with a noticeable bump, linear switches with a smooth keystroke, and clicky switches that provide both tactile feedback and an audible click sound. These switches are popular due to their compatibility, long lifespan, and consistent typing experience.

Keycap compatibility depends on the layout of your keyboard. Special attention should be paid to the backspace, tab, capslock, enter, shift, ctrl, win, alt, fn, and menu keys, as they may have non-standard dimensions. Some keyboards have unique key lengths to accommodate smaller size layouts. For complete sets or WASD, arrow and other sets, make sure your layout matches. For individual Craftsman keycaps, it is recommended to use 1u size keycaps on function or navigation rows.

The majority of keycaps are designed to be compatible with switches featuring cross-shaped stems, the most prevalent type of stem. To verify if your switch has a cross-shaped stem, just remove a keycap and inspect the stem. If it indeed has a cross shape, it’s likely to accommodate most keycaps available on the market.
